General tips on how to add to the PONS Online Dictionary

You want to enter a word or phrase and its translation?

Before you can enter a new word or a phrase please make sure that this has not already been entered. If you can’t find a particular word or phrase in the PONS Online Dictionary you can add your personal contribution to the dictionary.

To do so follow the link “Create new entry” or click the pencil icon in the OpenDict entry you want to add to.

Please note that you must be logged in (and have previously registered) before you can publish a contribution in the dictionary.

Please bear in mind that your entries will be read by a large community of dictionary users. All entries that fail to comply with the terms and conditions of use because they glorify violence, have sexist content, or promote hatred against a social group will be deleted.

Creating a new dictionary entry

It’s this simple:

1) choose the language and direction of translation,

2) enter your word or phrase,

3) save.

To make your entry more precise, i.e. to describe the headword, phrase, and translation in more detail, you can add further information under Optional Details like e.g. subject area, regional, or grammatical details.

Adding to an existing entry

Likewise you can add an additional translation to an entry under a headword that already exists. To do so click the pencil icon under the OpenDict entry.

Also further phrases and example sentences can be added to an existing dictionary entry. Read also the instructions for new OpenDict authors.

How do I benefit from entering a word or phrase?

When you have entered a contribution to the online dictionary, the word you contributed will be shown together with the related subject area on your business card. Other users can therefore see where your strengths lie.

When you add further details to your business card you can draw the attention of other participants to your general language skills.
